LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) and LDPE (low-density polyethylene) are commonly used polymers in the plastics industry. India is a significant importer and exporter of both polymers, majorly these are imported into the country to fulfil the demand of various industries. In this article, we will explore the import and export statistics of these polymers.
During the financial year 2022, the film and sheet sector comprised 52% of India’s total polyethylene (PE) demand, with overall sector-wise demand for PE reaching 6,447 kilotons. The blow molding sector was the second largest in terms of PE demand, accounting for a 15% share. During the same time, the United States was the primary destination for overall Indian exports, making up almost 18% of the total, followed by the United Arab Emirates at over 6%. Although supported by lower arrivals, the market may continue to face challenges until demand increases or costs decrease.
The Indian Custom Export Shipment database reported billions of dollars worth of exports related to LDPE and LLDPE. Here are the details:
• India’s import data of LLDPE reveals that the United States accounted for the maximum share, followed by Spain and Japan.
• India is also the 3rd largest importer of LDPE scrap in the world, with most of its imports coming from the United States, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.
• India is one of the world’s largest importers of LDPE granules, with most of its imports coming from Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Qatar. In March 2023, India imported 11,863 shipments of LDPE granules.
The Indian market for polyethylene (PE) has shifted towards a stable to softer trend in recent times. India will likely continue to rely heavily on imports to meet its LDPE and LLDPE demands. Despite India’s tightened Covid-19 restrictions in some major hubs in the past, the overall growth trend in the LDPE and LLDPE market is expected to remain strong in the coming years with the increase in significance for India in the market.
