Why Chilli Prices In India Are On A Roller Coaster Ride?

Chilli, one of the most widely used spices in Indian cuisine, has been facing a tumultuous time in the market due to various factors. Red chilli price today is so expensive. From the thrips attack to unexpected weather events like hailstorms, the prices of chilli have been on a roller-coaster ride in the past two crop seasons. In this article, we will take a closer look at the ups and downs of chilli prices in the crop season of 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, and how these fluctuations have impacted the production and quality of chilli, leading to changes Guntur market chilli prices.

Factors Impacting Current Rates

  • Thrips Attack And Supply Shortage- The chilli crop season of Sep 2021–May 2022 was marred by the attack of thrips, a common pest that feeds on the leaves and buds of chilli plants. This attack caused significant damage to chilli production and quality, leading to a shortage of red chilli in the market. As a result, in Guntur market red chilli price per kg reached a historical high of up to Rs. 300. This shortage of supply and high prices affected both the domestic and international markets, leading to concerns about the availability and affordability of chilli.
  • Hailstorm Impact And Price Decline- Unfortunately, in late March 2023, unexpected rain and hailstorm hit the chilli-growing regions, resulting in a decrease in the quality of chilli. This decline in quality led to a decline in prices at the Guntur market, with red chilli price per kg dropping to Rs. 230. This declining price trend may continue until mid-April 2023, as the market grapples with the impact of the hailstorm on the quality and availability of chilli.
  • Recovery In Current Season- In the current crop season (Sep 2022-May 2023), there are no thrips attacks reported so far. The average chilli production is observed to be 25 Qtl/acre, which was a positive sign for the industry. With the arrival of new crops in November 2022, 1 kg red chilli price decreased by around Rs. 150, providing some relief to the consumers. However, the demand for chilli in both domestic and international markets remained high, particularly in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) sector, leading to a gradual increase in prices from January 2023-February 2023, reaching up to Rs. 275/kg.

Market Outlook

Despite the challenges faced by the chilli industry in the current season, there is hope for a recovery in the coming months. It is expected that with the arrival of fresh crops in May 2023, the chilli prices may increase again, potentially reaching up to Rs. 250/kg. However, the market dynamics and weather conditions will continue to play a crucial role in determining chilli prices in India in the upcoming weeks.

OFB’s Insight

The past two chilli crop seasons have been challenging for the chilli industry, as the production, quality, and prices of chilli both were adversely affected. The market has seen historical highs and lows, with prices reaching up to Rs. 300/kg and dropping to Rs. 230/kg. Despite the uncertainties, the demand for chilli remains strong in both domestic and international markets. With hopes for a better season in the future, the chilli industry continues to be a significant contributor to the culinary world, adding spice and flavour to our meals.
