Coal India Limited (CIL), the state-run coal mining company, has achieved record production, exceeding its target for the FY2023 financial year. The surge in coal production has been attributed to the government’s focus on the environment and its commitment to the Paris Agreement. With these measures in place, Coal India Limited has become one of the most efficient and cleanest coal producers in the world.
Let’s have a look at the notable achievements of CIL:
- Overachiever- CIL had set a target of producing 657 million tons of coal in the year ended 31 March 2023, it exceeded the target by producing 661 million tons. This is the highest production figure since the company’s incorporation in 1975.
- Unprecedented Annual Volume Increase– Since the company’s inception, the volume growth of 81 MT in a single year has been a historic high, more than doubling the previous high of 44.5 MT reported in 2015–2016. This significant increase is almost equal to the growth of the seven prior fiscal years, starting in 2015–2016.
- Subsidiaries Exceed Production Targets– BCCL, NCL, WCL, and MCL, four of Coal India’s subsidiaries, have surpassed their individual output goals for the year. With 113% target satisfaction, BCCL had the greatest accomplishment in percentage terms. MCL, located in Odisha, comprised 27.5% of the total production.
Insight
The biggest coal producer in the world, CIL has achieved a record-breaking 100.4% goal satisfaction as of the penultimate day of the fiscal year 2023. When compared to FY 2023, the company’s growth rate increased by 13%, and by the end of FY 2023, the output is predicted to reach 703.4 million tons (MT).
