Current Challenges Faced By The Indian Pipe Industry

Current Challenges Faced By The Indian Pipe Industry

The Indian pipe market is currently facing challenges due to fluctuating prices and supply constraints. As the market adjusts to the current supply constraints, manufacturers may need to innovate to overcome these challenges and meet the demand for pipes in India.

Here is a closer look at some of the factors affecting the market:

Price Fluctuations

In recent weeks, HDPE prices increased by Rs 2/kg, but prices for PVC pipes remained unchanged. However, the anticipation is that PVC prices will increase after 10 March 2023.

On the other hand, DI pipe prices have remained constant over the last two weeks, with prices around Rs 1,250 and Rs 1,220 ex Kharagpur for Jai Balaji and Rashmi, respectively, for 100mm K7 grade, as per the market sources.

Supply Constraints

As confirmed by major manufacturers, the shortage of raw materials is causing PVC pipe supplies to be currently constrained. This situation is expected to persist through March. Meanwhile, HDPE pipe supplies have a lead time of at least two weeks.

Issues Affecting DI Pipe Production

As per industry experts, Rashmi Metallics, a prominent manufacturer of DI pipes, is facing a significant mold issue, leading to longer delivery lead times. Regular diameter molds, such as 250mm, 350mm, and 1200mm, are currently under repair. This situation is due to immense pressure on all DI pipe manufacturers this quarter.

Record-Breaking DI Pipe Dispatches

Despite the challenges faced by manufacturers, the demand for DI pipes remains strong. It is estimated that Rashmi Metalliks based in east India, dispatched a record-breaking around 45,000 – 50,000 tons of DI pipes in last month, the highest quantity of ductile iron pipes in India across manufacturers this quarter. This figure indicates that there is significant demand for these types of pipes in the market.

Pressure On Contractors For Pipe Procurement

The long delivery lead times for DI pipes are causing contractors to feel pressure from government departments for pipe procurement. To mitigate this pressure, contractors should focus on larger diameters- greater than 400mm, as they have shorter lead times than smaller diameters like 100mm, 150mm, and 200mm. Larger diameter pipes can be delivered this month, which can help contractors meet their procurement deadlines.

Future Prospects

While the current market conditions pose challenges, it remains to be seen how prices will fluctuate in the coming months. Supply constraints, mold issues, and government pressure on contractors for pipe procurement may continue to affect the market. However, the strong demand for DI pipes indicates that there is potential for growth in the industry.

Insight

The Indian pipe market is currently experiencing fluctuating prices and supply constraints, with DI pipes facing longer delivery lead times due to mold issues. Contractors should focus on larger-diameter pipes for shorter lead times. While the current market conditions pose challenges, the strong demand for DI pipes indicates potential for growth in the industry.
