Here Is Why Coal Sector Is A Key Contributor To India's Growing Economy

India’s rapidly expanding economy greatly benefits from the coal industry. Rajnath Singh, the defense minister, recently exhorted the industry to ensure energy security to meet the nation’s rising demand. In his remarks at the beginning of the 7th round of commercial coal mines auction, he applauded the ministry’s efforts to ensure a transparent online auction of coal blocks, which has made India a sought-after investment destination worldwide.

Notable Developments Of India’s Coal Sector

  • Increased Coal Production- Pralhad Joshi, the Minister of Coal, Mines, and Parliamentary Affairs, predicted that this fiscal year’s coal output would reach a record 880 million tons, up 14% from the previous one. All efforts are being made to increase the production and export of thermal coal by 2025–2026 as the coal sector is completely prepared to meet the growing demand.
  • Coal Mine Auction- A total of 106 coal blocks are up for sale in the 7th round of commercial coal mine auction, which has just been started by the Ministry of Coal. These mines produce coal and lignite and are in the regions of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar. The mines available are a combination of coal mines covered by the MMDR Act and the CMSP Act.
  • Employment Avenues And Increased Profit- With the opening of 29 coal mines that were auctioned off during the 6th round, the coal industry has made a significant contribution to the Indian economy and created employment opportunities for about one lakh people. When these mines will be active, they will bring in Rs. 14,497 crores a year.
