Role of Reinforced Cement Concrete in Construction Quality

When constructing a new building, it is important to know the basic components in constructing a building. Reinforced Cement Concrete also known as RCC is one of the remarkably useful components in construction. 

Reinforced Cement Concrete is a composite made by reinforcing high-quality TMT steel rods with the cement concrete mixture. Concrete is poured from more than 1 m height to the moulds where steel bars are arranged as per standard spacing. The concrete cover protects the TMT steel rods from corrosion when exposed to the atmosphere and from other acidic environments.

RCC is known for its high compressive strength and can withstand high tensile stress. It increases the strength in between concrete sections and prevents cracks and damage due to shrinkage stresses and temperature changes.

Many of the current infrastructure projects such as roads, airports and overbridges use RCC as the construction material. RCC is fairly used in large infrastructure projects such as dams, docks and retaining walls. It is also majorly used in Atomic plants to block radiation emission. RCC constructions are more preferred when higher stories are made and load is increased due to that.

Recent trends in construction are 3D building information modelling that helps in digitizing the data, introduction of intelligent equipment like IoT sensors and GPS trackers in RCC construction helps to improve production cycle, production of self healing cement and light generating cement and finally the introduction of drones. The ease of RCC construction can be doubled using innovative tools and latest approaches in the construction industry.

RCC has many advantages compared to other building materials. 

  1. Durability: Brick and mortar buildings might crack under high load over a period of time where RCC buildings last upto 100 years. 
  2. High tensile strength: RCC constructions have high tensile strength making it capable to withstand high load and withstand high strain without breaking.
  3. Longer load bearing path: Due to the steel core of the RCC composite, it has a long load bearing path enabling better resilience when the load is multiplied.
  4. Economical: Brick and mortar construction is expensive compared to RCC construction. This is majorly because of the high labour cost, raw material cost, and areas of the wall. 
  5. Protects Steel: The concrete cover protects the steel from getting damaged due to exposure to the outside environment.
  6. Resistance to temperature changes: The RCC constructed buildings have higher resistance to temperature changes and have high fire resistance.
  7. Weather Resistance: If you are looking for a raw material that protects the building from damage due to weather conditions, then RCC would be the best construction material for that.
  8. Better resilience during seismic activity: The sturdiness of the steel helps to withstand earthquakes or any other major catastrophe. The steel and concrete bong is high which in turn creates higher compression strength.
