Global Aluminium Production Sees An Uptick In February 2023

The global aluminium industry witnessed a remarkable rise in production in February 2023, according to the latest data from the International Aluminium Institute. This increase is mainly driven by China’s contribution, which plays a significant role in shaping the aluminium market.

World Production Data

  • January 2023- The total daily average rose to 188.3 thousand metric tons, up from 187.8 thousand metric tons in January 2023. This month-on-month growth is primarily attributed to increased production in Africa, South America, Asia (excluding China), and Russia & Eastern Europe.
  • ·Year-on-Year Increase- Comparing February 2023 to February 2022, there has been an impressive 3% year-on-year increase in global aluminium production. In February 2023, total production reached 5,273 thousand metric tons, up from 5,135 thousand metric tons in February 2022. This growth can be attributed to the strong performance of various regions, including Africa (6%), South America (22%), and Asia (excluding China) with a 1% increase.
  • China: The Major Contributor- China remains the largest producer of aluminium globally, with an estimated production of 3107 thousand metric tons in February 2023. The country’s dominance in the market can be attributed to its vast reserves of bauxite, the primary raw material used in aluminium production, and the presence of numerous smelting facilities.

Aluminium Production Boost Reasons

Several factors contributed to the increase in global aluminium production such as:

  • Growing Demand- The demand for aluminium has been steadily rising due to its versatility and lightweight properties. Industries such as automotive, aerospace, construction, and packaging heavily rely on aluminium for various applications.
  • Favourable Market Conditions- The improving global economic climate has encouraged investments in the aluminium industry, leading to increased production capacity.
  • Technological Advancements– Innovations in the aluminium production process have resulted in more efficient and sustainable methods, further boosting output.

Insight

The global aluminium market is expected to maintain its upward trajectory in the coming years, fueled by increasing demand and continuous innovation. China will likely remain the major contributor to this growth, further solidifying its position as a dominant player in the aluminium industry.
