What Is The Impact Of Crude Oil On High-Density And Low-Density Polyethylene?

What Is The Impact Of Crude Oil On High-Density And Low-Density Polyethylene?

Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and trace amounts of other elements like sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen. Crude oil plays a crucial role in the global economy, as it serves as the primary raw material for various industries, including polymers, chemicals, and many other different manufacturing industries. In this article, let’s explore crude oil’s impact on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) as well as low-density polyethylene (LDPE):

HDPE And LDPE

·   HDPE is known for its excellent chemical resistance, making it suitable for applications requiring high resistance to chemicals, including acids, alkalis, oil, grease, solvents, and detergents.

·   LDPE, on the other hand, has been studied for its potential use in pyrolysis routes of fuel production. A 2021 study by SM Al-Salem focused on using virgin grades of low and linear low-density polyethylene for this purpose, aiming to mimic the process of converting crude oil into fuel.

Polyethylene And Crude Oil Link

The relationship between crude oil and polyethylene is complex and influenced by various factors, such as:

·       Supply and demand

·       Geographical factors

·       Market dynamics etc.

For instance, when heavy crude oil prices were up, polyethylene producers in the US enjoyed good profit margins due to their ability to use cheaper natural gas (alternative feedstock) for ethylene production, while ethylene prices were following the crude oil trends.

Crude Oil’s Price Impact

When it comes to the impact of crude oil prices on high-density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene, it is very significant. The reason behind its significant impact is- these polymers are derived from crude oil. Polyethylene can also be extracted from natural gas and coal, but the popular belief links crude oil with polyethylene more than any other feedstock. The prices of crude oil, polyethylene, and ethylene are related to each other, and fluctuations in crude oil prices can directly affect the cost of these polymers. When crude oil prices increase, the cost of producing HDPE and LDPE also goes up, leading to higher prices for these products.

Thus, crude oil not only affects HDPE and LDPE production along with the prices, but it also influences plastic prices in general. Refineries process fossil fuels into petrochemicals, and they end up becoming the plastics used in everyday life. Simply put, a tight oil market may result in more expensive plastic products.

Insight

The impact of crude oil on polymers is multifaceted as crude oil is a significant raw material used to produce HDPE and LDPE, affecting their production, pricing, and applications. Understanding the relationship between crude oil and polyethylene prices and using that effectively will be crucial for sourcing persons and end-use buyers to make informed decisions and negotiate effectively in the market.
