India's Metal Production Soars Amid Rising Demand

India’s metal production experienced a remarkable increase in March 2023, driven by a surge in demand from various sectors such as electric vehicles (EV), construction, electrical appliances, and white goods. Aluminium, copper, zinc, and lead registered significant growth in production, with only zinc witnessing a slight dip. In this article, let’s find out more about the same:

Key Highlights

  • Aluminium Production Increased- India’s aluminium production reached 350,000 tons in March 2023, an 11% increase from February’s 316,000 tons and surpassing the 347,000 tons recorded in March 2022. The country’s overall installed capacity for aluminium smelting stands at 4.1 million tons, with major players including Vedanta Ltd., Hindalco, BALCO, and NALCO contributing significantly to the industry.
  • Copper Production Rebounded– Copper production in India saw a massive 23% month-on-month increase, reaching 435,000 tons in March 2023, up from 355,000 tons in February. This marks a staggering 91% year-on-year increase from March 2022’s figure of 227,400 tons. Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) emerged as the top producer, followed by Hindalco and Sesa Sterlite (Vedanta). Despite the permanent closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper smelter in Tamil Nadu in May 2018, copper production in India has rebounded strongly.
  • Zinc Production Faced Challenges– Although zinc production increased by 15% month-on-month to 77,000 tons in March 2023, it experienced a marginal 1% year-on-year decline. Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) remains India’s sole refined zinc producer, contributing 77,000 tons in March 2023. Zinc production faces challenges due to declining demand and market uncertainty.
