Russia Emerges As India's Top Fertilizer Supplier In FY 2022-23

Russia has left other countries behind to become India’s top mineral fertilizers supplier, as per Dr Ajay Sahai, Head, of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO). This significant milestone highlights Russia’s dominance in the Indian fertilizer market. Here is more information regarding Russia’s remarkable growth:

1.  Leading the Way; China, Saudi Arabia, Oman, & Morocco Follow

Dr. Sahai stated Russia’s fertilizer exports have crossed $3 billion during the FY 2022-2023. Following Russia, other notable suppliers include China, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Morocco. Notably, both Saudi Arabia and China recorded shipments amounting to approximately $2 billion each, indicating their substantial presence in the Indian fertilizer market.

2.   Nutrients Fueling India’s Agricultural Growth

The nutrients India imports from Russia encompass a wide range, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, ammonium phosphates, and urea. Dr. Sahai emphasized that Russia offers competitive prices for these essential agricultural inputs. India, being an agriculture-driven country, is one of the top agricultural fertilizers consumers across the globe, while being among the top producers as well. Although India primarily uses its nutrients domestically, it imported a staggering 34 million tons of fertilizers from Russia between April-February in the 2022-2023 fiscal year, marking the highest volume in the past three years.

3.   Growth & Global Position

Russia has witnessed a remarkable 40% increase in fertilizer production over the past decade, reaching an average of 55 million tons annually. Andrey Guryev, the head of the Russian Association of Fertilizer Producers, stated that Russia has now become the world’s second-largest producer of nutrients, trailing only China. Russia has surpassed both the United States and India in fertilizer production. With plans to further elevate production to 70 million tons in the next five years, Russia’s position in the global fertilizer market is set to strengthen.

OFB’s Insight

Russia’s ascendancy as India’s primary fertilizer supplier reflects its robust production capabilities and ability to offer competitive prices. This shift not only highlights the changing dynamics of the fertilizer industry but also showcases Russia’s commitment to meeting India’s agricultural needs. As India continues to focus on enhancing agricultural productivity, the partnership between these two nations in the fertilizer sector is poised for further growth and collaboration.
