These Are Challenges Faced By The Sugar Industry In India

The world’s largest producer as well as consumer of sugar and the world’s second-largest exporter of sugar, India, recorded over 5000 LMT (Lakh Metric Tons) of sugarcane production in the sugar season 2021-2022. 35 LMT of sugar was used to produce ethanol and 359 LMT of sugar was produced by sugar mills in India in the sugar season 2021-2022. In the same period, India’s sugar exports were recorded as highest at 109.8 LMT. Despite such high production, still some challenges push back the sugar industry, and it can’t achieve its growth potential.

In this article, we will explore the same and how the sugar industry can grow and reach its potential.

Major Challenges

Businesses built around the sugar industry in India face several challenges. Broadly speaking, these are three major challenges:

·     Seasonal – One of the primary challenges is the seasonal nature of the industry, as sugarcane is only available during harvest time. This leads to a significant gap between sugar factories and the fields, resulting in a loss of sucrose if the sugarcane is not crushed within 24 hours.

·    Obsolete – Another challenge faced by the sugar industry in India is the use of old and inefficient methods of sugar production in India. Many mills in the country are outdated and utilize obsolete machinery, leading to uneconomic and inefficient operations. Additionally, management and labour issues further exacerbate the situation, causing many units to become insolvent.

·    Other – The sugar industry also faces challenges in terms of stagnating production, price regulations, and an unstable sugarcane market. Water scarcity is another significant issue, as sugarcane is a water-intensive crop, and its production often pollutes freshwater ecosystems with silt, fertilizers, and chemical sludge from mills.

Present Scenario

Despite these challenges, the sugar industry in India continues to thrive. It’s because sugar manufacturers in India have understood that adaptation is key. Sugar mills in India are adapting to changing market conditions and investing in new technologies to improve efficiency and sustainability to a certain extent. The government has also taken steps to support the industry, such as providing incentives for sugar production in India and promoting sugar exports.
