Unlocking The Potential: How Can India Boost Maize Productivity And Revolutionize Agriculture Sector?

India is one of the major maize-growing countries in the world, covering an area of 9.2 million hectares. Over the years, production has increased significantly, but productivity is still a major concern. This article discusses the current state of maize cultivation in India, the challenges faced by the agriculture sector, and potential solutions to improve productivity. Let’s get started:

Cultivation Overview

  • Maize Cultivation In India– In India, the two primary maize growing seasons are rainy (kharif) and winter (rabi), with kharif maize making up 83% of the nation’s total maize acreage. However, more than 70% of the kharif maize acreage is rainfed, which results in several biotic and abiotic stressors that harm productivity. As a result, it has lower average productivity than rabi maize, which is typically farmed in an ecosystem with a guaranteed balance.
  • State-Wise Maize Cultivation– The two Indian states having the most land planted in maize agriculture are Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, with 15% for each, followed by Maharashtra (10%), Rajasthan (9%), and Uttar Pradesh (8%). With some districts, like Krishna and West Godavari, recording output levels as high as 12,000 kg/ha, Andhra Pradesh has the highest productivity of all the states.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite the increase in production, India’s productivity is almost half of the global average. The major reasons for the low productivity in India include:

  • Poor soil fertility
  • Inadequate water supply
  • Poor seed quality
  • Climate change
  • Lack of access to inputs

Major maize producers who are smallholder farmers are constrained in their ability to produce high yields because they lack access to inputs such as better seeds, fertilisers, and insecticides.

Solutions To Improve Productivity

To improve maize productivity in India, the agriculture sector needs to take a holistic approach. This includes measures such as:

  • Improving soil fertility
  • Providing adequate irrigation facilities
  • Promoting the use of high-quality seeds
  • Providing access to inputs to smallholder farmers

Additionally, the government can also provide financial incentives to farmers who adopt best practices for maize cultivation. Research and development efforts can focus on developing drought-tolerant varieties and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

OFB’s Insight

Maize productivity in India is a major concern for the agriculture sector. While there has been a significant increase in maize production over the years, productivity is still far from the global average. Addressing the challenges faced by maize cultivation in India and adopting sustainable agricultural practices can help improve productivity and contribute to the growth of the agriculture sector.
