Go, India, Go!

As a die-hard sports enthusiast, the 1st time I came across the Olympics was in Barcelona ’92. India had 1 medal contender, Limba Ram (the reigning world record holder), who lost early. Paes came close in doubles but exited in the quarters. India’s drawn its 3rd straight blank.

To a young Indian mind, as India marched ahead across several indices, the performance at the global sports stage has always been disappointing. Yes, there have been a few successes here and there, though. But, there are always very few medal contenders, and the majority of them wilt. Was it genetics, lack of champions, the importance of sports in culture and national priorities – no one knew, but I bet no one felt good! In sharp contrast are several small countries in continental Europe and terrain torn Africa, where the Olympics is about collective national pride.

But we hope Tokyo will be different. They are back in Asia. The pandemic’s made it a more level playing field than ever, with lesser preparations for all. We have monetary backing like never before. And we’ve started well on the 1st day. What I can tell you, though, is that a better showing than London ’12 (our best-ever show) will galvanize the entire country across all walks of life. We’re with you – go, India, go!
