In love with March
Growing up, March has always been the best month to savor for all of us.
As an infant, it was the climate. Winters receded; summer’s not yet in. Beautiful dawns and even better dusks. Less instructions from parents, it’s as if our bodies were crafted for March; other months only polluted the experience.
As a child, it was the kick of preparing for the year-end exams. To showcase that you were best in class, that you were ready for the next level. It was as much the teachers’ and parents’ wait as it was ours.
And then waiting for the vacations post-exams. Almost everyone got a deserved trip, some to their loved natives’, some to lands unseen.
As a teen, it was about waiting for summer sports to start and seeing our stars in action. My most favored were cricket (Counties and domestic tests used to start beginning April) and tennis (the European clay-court season kicks in, ending with the French and Wimbledon right after).
And then, as a professional, waiting to end the financial year with a swoosh, in waiting for promotions and rewards to follow. One had to end well to win.
And then in business, March is like no other. It’s the month that defines your year. It’s the one that’s etched in memory as exit run rates (especially for high-growth companies where the full fiscal hardly presents a full picture). E.g., at OfBusiness, we plan to grow month on month by 40%, a lofty aspiration at the scale at which we are.
What I learnt then is true even now – if you ain’t marching in March, you ain’t marching at all.
