The last sermons
We thought we’d tided over by March. Streets were buzzing. Business was roaring. We were either inoculated by the disease or waiting to be by the dose.
And then came April. Not very different from April ’20. Men fighting the disease. Or helping a kin fight. Or staying back so they don’t have to fight. And the fight is ghastly. In hospitals. At homes. In what we read. Speak. Write. Think.
It may not be all gloomy, though, says the optimist in me.
While winning a war with the enemy down, the last man standing fights back the hardest. The tailender always swings the hardest. The flame burns brightest before it goes out. The last nail in the coffin is the hardest.
If we won easily at the end, it wasn’t against a worthy enemy. Covid, though, is the worthiest of them all. For it’s been a great teacher.
After many personalized sermons last year to each, it’s now teaching us all patience. If we overcame the fear of the unknown last April, we’d beat the known one too this April. It’s not hope that we need, but patience. Just to wait it out.
It’s also teaching us compassion. The way and magnitude in which each one is helping the other out now is unprecedented. A trait we’d forgotten in our personal pursuits.
Compassion, patience: last sermons of the great, dying teacher!
