Weekly Update: Government Intervenes As Wheat Market Is On Rise

Summary

The Delhi Wheat market has shown remarkable strength, with prices surging from Rs. 2,535 to Rs. 2,600 per quintal in just one week, reflecting increased demand. The government is planning to release more Wheat stocks for the upcoming festive season.

The Wheat market has been displaying remarkable strength, painting a bullish picture for traders and farmers alike. From significant price hikes to government interventions, the Delhi Wheat market has been a hot topic of discussion among traders and consumers alike.

Key Highlights

Let’s dive into the last week’s highlights:

1. Price Surge In Delhi: The week began with Wheat prices opening at Rs. 2,535 per quintal in Delhi on 11 September 2023 and the market saw a remarkable surge, with prices closing at Rs. 2,600 per quintal on 16 September 2023. This substantial increase of Rs. 55 per quintal in just one week caught the attention of market enthusiasts. This surge in prices reflects the growing appetite for Wheat-based products in the region.

2. Arrivals Trends: Accompanying the demand surge was a notable increase in the quantity of Wheat arriving in the Delhi market. Last week, 33,500 quintals of Wheat made their way to the market, marking a 7,000-quintal increase compared to the previous week. This surge in arrivals contributed to the rapid price rise. Wheat influx indicates that farmers are responding to the increased demand by supplying more of their produce to the market.

Punjab’s markets also saw robust prices for Wheat, Flour, and Semolina during the same period. All these signs point toward a Wheat market that’s brimming with optimism.

3. Government Interventions: The government, well aware of the importance of Wheat in Indian households, has taken steps to stabilize prices. Under the OMSS, the FCI has sold a substantial 16 lakh tons of Wheat so far. In the latest FCI tender, a total of 1.70 lakh tons of Wheat were sold.

Furthermore, to curb rising Wheat prices, the government has reduced the stock limit from 3,000 tons to 2,000 tons. The Food Secretary has announced that the government will release more Wheat stocks in the open market, especially with the upcoming festive season in mind.

To assist Wheat traders, the government has increased the maximum sales limit for Wheat under OMSS from 100 tons to 300 tons, as per reliable sources. This move aims to empower traders and meet the growing demand for this staple grain.

Challenges

Traders in Madhya Pradesh have been on strike for the past 15 days, leading to market closures. Weak arrivals have been observed in the markets due to recent rainfall, adding to the challenges faced by the Wheat industry.

OFB’s Insight

The Delhi market’s future looks promising if it remains above the crucial level of 2560. This suggests that the market may continue to ride the wave of high demand in the coming days. As we look ahead, the government’s commitment to maintaining price stability remains a key factor. The government is closely monitoring the situation, especially with the festive season around the corner with a plan to release more Wheat stocks in the open market.
