Living a legacy

On 9th Dec 11 AM, I was left to live a legacy. Through heritage.

Of nerves of steel.
An iron will.
Of just being at it.
And beating mass opinion.

My mom was a working mother from the late ‘70s for 30 years. Most of it across Tier II towns in Odisha, where she commuted in crowded inter-town buses daily. And this as a teacher in physics in colleges, where she had to be cutting edge in knowledge and research. Amidst this, she did her Ph.D from IIT – Kgp. All whilst, raising me and my sister almost single handedly. Never complained. Always believing that the best was yet to come.

Cancer brought her to a grinding halt in 2006. Doctors gave her months, she made it 14.5 years. She endured 2 relapses and 4x the chemos and radios a normal human being can. Even in her last relapse, when most gave her days, she beat them to it with 20 months. Still not complaining. Still believing that the best was yet to come.

And I moved on from being the pursuer of her dream to first her counsellor, then her nurse and now the carrier of her legacy.

In her sleep and in peace, all she wanted was her legacy to be lived on.

Of nerves of steel.
An iron will.
Of just being at it.
And beating mass opinion.

(For those were her last coherent words).
