Mary, Mary Quite Contrary!

Mary, Mary Quite Contrary!

These are muted times. Our economy hasn’t delivered yet, the financial markets are hammered and a hung parliament looms while the hunger in us grows.

It’s in these times that the contrarian rises. He doesn’t look for social proof. He’s armed with dogged belief, his own. He bets heavy.

The 2008 financial crisis was the last worst hit. When obituaries of the US were being written, Buffet, the famed contrarian, acted. He famously bought a “Slice of America” by buying through the nose on S&P, GE, Goldman Sachs and others. America, since, has burgeoned and he has more than rode the wave. Same holds true for the start-ups of 2008. Hungrier, leaner, asset light – their growth hasn’t been curbed. Airbnb ($25B, growing) leads the class.

Some of the finest businesses were made in recessions. GE (1890, Baring Crisis), Walt Disney (1929, Great depression), Microsoft (1975, Oil crisis) and the “new” Apple (2001, Dot Com bust) surged by investing amidst gloom.

At OfBusiness, as a NBFC, we believe that these times give us an opportunity. Acquisition will be cheaper, assets created healthier and the cost structure will get leaner. Hence, we’ve decided to pound ahead.

Trust us contrarians to last and sing the whole of “Mary Mary, Quite Contrary…” after our garden grows.
