Patience, The Virtue

To me, British triple jumper Jonathon Edwards stood for patience in my growing-up years. He was a late starter. In the ’88 Seoul Olympics, he came in 23 rd; he did not qualify for the finals. Slid worse in ’92 Barcelona; now 35 th. As the favorite in ’96 Atlanta, he still just got silver. And at the ripe old age of 34, he finally landed gold in Sydney in 2000. When asked what had changed through the years, Edwards, then a devout Christian, said that he’d been asked to wait and be at it all the time.

In the week that went by, OfBusiness (and I) completed 6 years of incorporation. Like in my previous vocations, I/we wasn’t a great starter. But we waited. And we were at it. Waiting sometimes tested our belief. But we never doubted. Or if we ever doubted, we looked around and found at least one amongst us armed with supreme belief, and we were back to the grind again. At times it was fun; most times, it wasn’t. Sometimes we were successful; most times, we weren’t. But the grind and waiting never stopped.

And I can proudly say that even after all the 6 years, we are still waiting. And we are at it. Our best is yet to come. We are still in silvery ’96 Atlanta; the golden 2000 Sydney awaits.
