The Proud Nationalist!

Coming off a remuneration review, the best in our short history at OfBusiness so far, I saw 4 ways in which OFBians reacted to it.

1st was as a capitalist. Simple zero-sum game. They just cared about whether they did (and got) the best of what the firm had to offer. If yes, they were over the moon. If no, they were dejected or pumped up for the next time.

2nd as a communist. All they cared about is how they’d done with respect to the best in their class (or department) and sought equality in rewards.

3rd was subscribing to the company’s favorite, the nationalist. That performance (and hence, reward) is a combination of individual, team, and firm performance. For, if the firm loses, no reward is sweet (definitely in the long term).

4th was as a theist, a small and dwindling species. That the firm is God. It has and will take care of me. Some argue that it pushes neither the person nor the company, but is brilliant for harmony.

In our view, most of us start with being the 1st. The best continue to be capitalists for some more time as others slip to the 2nd. But being a capitalist forever is not scalable, and hence the ones who create history are the ones who graduate to the 3rd. And how many we have of them is the barometer of our success and culture.
