Travails of returns - Part 19

My 19th in a series documenting traits to start a business in India, and how we tackled them early at @OfBusiness and @Oxyzo.

Now, it’s the turn of building the perfect workplace.

One which attracts, retains and gets the best out of its members.

One whose leaders know that members are looking for more than the blinding obvious i.e., a great (employer) brand and a greater, growing package.

After years of having looked for it, studying what others provide and having built one (along with a few others at @OfBusiness and @Oxyzo), I have understood that most of us (beyond the blinding obvious above), look for what is in the French national motto (and also in preamble to our constitution) , Liberté, égalité, fraternité: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

Liberty: Freedom to express, without any fear of consequences. Anywhere, Anytime and in any manner as one desires. Freedom so as not to be bound by chains of bondage beyond the realms of what one has to deliver. Freedom to opt between choices by themselves, if ever there are choices to be made.

Equality: Every workplace provides an opportunity for all to rise. But what members expect is that each one has the same shot at goal. All are trained in equal measure for it. And the one who delivers the most (objectively measured, free of biases) will rise. And whence one has risen, but is in the fray next time around, he/ she has to again start an equal.

Fraternity: Like-minded people, with similar tastes, fears and dreams. In a set-up that gives you the benefit of doubt if matters are on the margin. And if one has erred, it provides a “real” second chance, delivered with compassion. A fraternity so true, that it remembers you by your deeds, even when you are gone.

Not all organizations can/ will get there. But awareness has been a great starting point for us at OfBusines and Oxyzo.
