SS Hot Rolled Coil Overview

Stainless steel hot rolled (HR) coils are flat-rolled products produced by rolling stainless steel slabs at temperatures above 1100 degrees C through a hot strip mill or Steckel mill. With thickness ranging from 3 mm to 12 mm, HR coils serve as the primary feedstock for cold rolling mills and are directly used in heavy industrial fabrication, structural applications, and equipment manufacturing.

In India, Jindal Stainless Limited operates the country's primary stainless steel hot rolling facilities at its integrated Jajpur plant (Odisha), equipped with a state-of-the-art Steckel mill capable of rolling a wide range of austenitic, ferritic, and duplex stainless steel grades. The former Salem Steel Plant (now part of Jindal Stainless) also contributes to domestic HR coil production.

SS HR coil pricing follows the same raw material linkage as CR coils - driven by nickel, chromium, and molybdenum costs - but at a lower price point since HR coils have not undergone the additional cold rolling, annealing, and finishing processes. OfBusiness provides industrial fabricators and equipment manufacturers with competitive HR coil pricing across all standard grades.

Grades & Specifications

SS hot rolled coils are available in a comprehensive range of grades:

Austenitic Grades:

  • 304/304L: Standard 18/8 Cr-Ni grade. Most widely used HR coil grade for general industrial fabrication and as feedstock for CR mills.
  • 316/316L: Molybdenum-bearing grade for chemical, petrochemical, and marine applications requiring enhanced corrosion resistance.
  • 310/310S: High Cr-Ni grade (25/20) for high-temperature applications up to 1150 degrees C. Used in furnace parts, kiln linings, and thermal processing equipment.
  • 321/347: Stabilized grades (Ti/Nb) for high-temperature service where sensitization must be avoided. Used in exhaust manifolds and heat exchangers.

Duplex Grades:

  • 2205 (UNS S31803): Austenitic-ferritic duplex grade with twice the yield strength of 304. Used in oil and gas, chemical, and desalination applications.

Specifications: Thickness: 3.0-12.0 mm | Width: 1000-1524 mm | Finish: No.1 (annealed and pickled) | Coil weight: 5-15 MT | Edge: Mill edge | Standards: IS 6911, ASTM A240, EN 10088-2.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current SS hot rolled coil price in India?
SS hot rolled coil prices depend on grade, thickness, and width. HR coils are generally priced lower than CR coils of the same grade since they don't undergo cold rolling and finishing. Grade 304 HR coils are the benchmark. Check OfBusiness for the latest pricing from Jindal Stainless and other producers.
What is the thickness range of SS hot rolled coils?
SS hot rolled coils are available from 3.0 mm to 12.0 mm thickness (known as HR No.1 finish). For thicker requirements, hot rolled plates (12-100 mm) are available. Widths range from 1000 to 1524 mm. HR coils serve as the feedstock for cold rolling (producing 0.3-3.0 mm CR coils).
What is the difference between SS HR and CR coils?
HR (Hot Rolled) coils are thicker (3-12 mm), have a matte No.1 finish, wider thickness tolerances, and lower cost. CR (Cold Rolled) coils are thinner (0.3-3 mm), have smoother 2B/BA finish, tighter tolerances, and higher strength due to work hardening. HR coils are for structural and heavy-duty applications; CR for aesthetic and precision applications.
Who manufactures SS hot rolled coils in India?
Jindal Stainless (Jajpur plant) is the primary HR coil producer in India with Steckel mill and hot strip mill. Jindal Stainless Hisar also has hot rolling capacity. Previously, Salem Steel Plant (SAIL) produced SS HR coils but has been acquired by Jindal Stainless. Imported HR coils come from TISCO (Indonesia), POSCO, and Chinese mills.
What surface finish does SS HR coil have?
SS hot rolled coils have a No.1 finish - a rough, dull, matte surface with mill scale, achieved after hot rolling and annealing/pickling. This finish is suitable for industrial applications where appearance is not critical. For better surface finish, HR coils are further cold-rolled to produce 2B, BA, or No.4 finishes.
What are the applications of SS HR coils?
SS HR coils and plates are used in heavy-duty applications: chemical and petrochemical equipment, pressure vessels, storage tanks, structural members, heavy fabrication, shipbuilding, and large-diameter welded pipes. Thicker plates (10mm+) are used in industrial flooring and wear-resistant applications.
