Acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C2H4O2. It is one of the most important organic acids having a wide range of applications. It is  used in many industries and such as food and beverage, pharmaceutical, textile, and chemical. 

In India, acetic acid is produced by several companies such as Indian Acetic Acid Corporation (IACAC), J.K. Chemicals, and K.C.P. Chemicals. The current demand for acetic acid in India is estimated to be around 150,000 tons per annum. The majority of the production is consumed in the agrochemical industry and for the manufacturing of vinyl acetate monomer. 

Properties Of Acetic Acid

Acetic acid is a colourless liquid with a sharp, pungent odour and a weak acidity, characterized by a pKa of 4.76. Its melting point is 16.7°C, boiling point is 118.1°C, and it has a relative density of 1.0537 g/cm3. It is miscible in water and also soluble in alcohol and ether. It is important to note that acetic acid is flammable and should be stored and handled with caution to prevent fire or explosion risks.

Uses Of Acetic Acid

Acetic acid has a vital role in a wide variety of industries which is as follows:

Food Industry: Acetic acid is commonly used in food preservation as an ingredient in pickling solutions and condiments, such as vinegar. It is also used as a flavouring agent in canned tomato products etc.

Pharmaceuticals: Pharma industry relies on acetic acid for the production of medication like analgesics, antibiotics, and antipyretics. Acetic acid is also used as an ingredient in ear drops to treat ear infections.

Manufacturing: In manufacturing, acetic acid serves as a starting material in the production of various chemicals. It is a key ingredient in producing vinyl acetate monomer, which is used for adhesives, paints, and synthetic fibres.

Household: it is used as a cleaning agent to remove rust, grease, and grime.

Pesticides: In this industry, it is used as an additive to herbicides and pesticides to control weeds.

Future Growth

India is one of the leading countries in the production and consumption of Acetic Acid. The Indian acetic acid market is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 5.59% during 2022-2027 which is above the global acetic acid market projection of growth by 4.7% in 2022-2028, owing to increasing investments from multinational companies and the growth of end-use industries.
