Ukraine is a leading agricultural exporter, and its commodity structure is dominated by crop products. Among these, oilseeds and vegetable oil are prominent. In 2022, the value of exports of oilseeds and fruits from Ukraine amounted to almost USD 3.8 billion, a significant increase of 54% compared to 2021.
Sunflower exports from Ukraine increased dramatically, from 0.08 million tons in 2021 to 2.8 million tons in 2022. Rapeseed exports increased from 2.7 million tons in 2021 to 3.1 million tons in 2022, and soybean exports increased from 0.9 million tons to 2.0 million tons.
Asia and Europe will continue to be the top consumers of Ukrainian oilseeds and oil. Notably, the European Union has strengthened its position as the primary market for Ukrainian oilseeds, accounting for over 75% of the total value of all oilseed exports from Ukraine.
In addition to that, Poland has emerged as one of the top buyers of Ukrainian oilseeds, with a share of 13.3%, displacing India, which had been the leading importer for over ten years. Other significant importers of domestic sunflower oil include Turkey (11.2%), Romania (7.2%), the Netherlands (6.6%), China (6.0%), Italy (5.4%), Bulgaria (4.9%), Spain (4.4%), and Iraq (3.3%).
Ukraine’s agricultural exports, particularly in the oilseed market, have seen significant growth in 2022. The shift in the market landscape underscores the importance of diversification and adapting to changes in demand to maintain Ukraine’s position as a leading agricultural exporter.
