India experienced a significant increase in coal production. The production figures for January 2023 are impressive as compared to January 2022, representing a notable uptick in activity within the coal sector. This comes as part of an overall surge in production across Indiaโs energy industry as a whole, showing that the country is well on its way to achieving its energy targets.
In this article, we will look at the key factors driving this surge in coal production, and what it means for the country going forward.
Indiaโs coal production in January 2023 witnessed an impressive 12.94% increase to 89.96 million tons (MnT) from 79.65 MnT in January 2022. This was revealed by the provisional data of the Ministry of Coal.
Production And Dispatch
Coal India Limited (CIL) registered a growth of 11.44%, whereas SCCL and captive mines/others registered a growth of 13.93% and 22.89% respectively. Out of the 37 coal-producing mines, 28 mines produced more than 100% and the output of 3 mines stood between 80% and 100% during January 2023.
At the same time, coal dispatch increased by 8.54% to 81.91 MnT from 75.47 MnT in January 2022-January 2023. During January 2023, CIL, SCCL and captives/others registered a growth of 6.07%, 14% and 21.9% by dispatching 64.45 MnT, 6.84 MnT and 10.61 MnT respectively.
Power utilities dispatch recorded a positive increase of 8.01% to 67.72 MnT from January 2023 as compared to 62.70 MnT in January 2022. Consequently, coal-based power generation recorded a growth of 17.79% in January 2023 and overall power generation in January 2023 was 18.33% higher than the power generated in January 2022. Total power generation advanced in January 2023 to 136973 MU from 128536 MU in December 2022 and registered a growth of 6.56%.
Insight
Although Indiaโs coal production and dispatch registered healthy growth in January 2023, the industry still faces several challenges. The primary issue is the lack of infrastructure and investment in coal mining. The industry also needs to be further modernized in order to ensure coal production and dispatch remain consistent. The government and the industry should also work to ensure safety protocols are properly implemented, to ensure the safety of miners and other workers.ย
