Is India Increasing Coal Imports To Fulfil High Domestic Demand?

Is India Increasing Coal Imports To Fulfil High Domestic Demand?

Due to rising domestic demand and declining seaborne pricing, India, one of the top five coal-producing nations worldwide, has seen a major increase in coal imports. Despite being a significant producer, why is India importing coal? It is because the nation still depends on imports to meet some of its needs for coal, particularly coking coal, an essential raw ingredient in steel production in India.

Highlights Of Coal Imports In India

  • Rising Coal Imports– During April 2022-February 2023, India’s coal import was 148.58 million tons (MT), up 32% from 112.38 MT in 2022. During the same period, coking coal imports increased by 7.69% to 50.50 MT, highlighting the nation’s significant reliance on foreign suppliers of this crucial raw material.
  • Factors Driving The SurgeVinaya Varma, the managing director of mjunction, a Kolkata-based business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce joint venture between Tata Steel and Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), attributed the rise in imports to the relaxation of seaborne pricing and rising domestic demand. This combination maintained the interest of Indian merchants and customers in making purchases.
  • Potential Restrictions– The improved domestic supply and sound stock position, notwithstanding the recent jump in coal imports, may limit import levels in the upcoming months, according to Varma. This move might result in a more balanced strategy between domestic production and reliance on imports to satisfy the nation’s rising coal demand.

OFB’s Insight

The necessity for a strategic balance between domestic production and imports is highlighted by increasing coal imports in India. It is being driven by strong domestic demand and decreasing seaborne pricing. Considering that the nation continues to import a significant amount of coking coal for steel production, resolving this dependence will be essential for maintaining a steady and sustainable supply of this essential resource.
