The Middle East has long been synonymous with oil production and trade, holding a central position in the global energy market. With vast reserves and immense wealth generated from oil sales, the region has experienced significant economic growth and development over the past century. This article delves into the history of oil discovery in the Middle East, the reasons behind its abundance, and the challenges facing the industry today.
In 1908, the Middle East’s history was forever changed when a significant oil deposit was found in Persia (modern-day Iran). Though it wasn’t until the conclusion of World War II in 1945 that large-scale oil production took off in the region. However, on March 3, 1938, a record-breaking oil discovery in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, set in motion a new era of oil production. This monumental event had an immense impact on Saudi Arabia’s physical, human, and political geography, and reverberated throughout the Middle East and around the world.
The abundance of crude oil in the Middle East can be attributed to tectonic activity that took place over millions of years. As the Tethys Ocean receded, the Middle East was transformed into a dry, sandy desert, exposing the topmost layers beneath which vast amounts of oil and natural gas deposits are present.
The Middle East’s dominance in the global oil market is evident in the fact that just under half of the world’s proven oil reserves are located in the region, while around 40% of the world’s proven gas reserves are also found here. Saudi Arabia, in particular, is the world’s largest oil exporter, shipping more than seven million barrels every day. Five of the top ten oil-producing countries are located in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait being major players in the industry.
The boundless riches obtained through oil sales have revolutionized the economies and societies of countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait. Millions of individuals living in these and other parts of the Middle East have acquired homes, jobs, and educational opportunities due to the oil industry. Thus, due to its vast oil reserves and impact on economies The Middle East has undoubtedly become the epicenter of the global crude oil trade.
