The Union Budget 2023 announcement has major implications for the IT sector in India. Allocation of Funds for the IT Sector

The Union Budget 2023 has allocated a budget of Rs. 16,549 crores to the IT ministry, which is 40% higher than the previous year. The allocated funds for FY2023 were 14,300 crores for the IT sector. Some key highlights from the corpus are:

  • INR 3,000 crore has been given to the Indian Semi-conductor Mission. From this, INR 1,799 crores have been set aside for the development of research facilities. The move will launch domestic development of semi-conductor and display manufacturing sub-sectors.
  •  The production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing has been allocated Rs. 4,499 crores. This scheme offers incentives ranging from 3% to 6% on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India.  
  • To enhance digital payment capabilities, the government has allocated Rs. 1,500 crores in the 2023-24 budget to promote digital payments. This initiative helps establish a strong digital payment system. It also promotes RuPay debit cards and BHIM-UPI digital transactions across various sectors. 
  • The funding for promoting electronics and IT hardware manufacturing (under the M-SIPS, electronics development fund, and manufacturing clusters scheme) has been decreased. The drop is from Rs. 1,200 crores to Rs. 700 crores

Impact of the Union Budget on the IT Industry

The Union Budget 2023 is expected to have a significant impact on the IT industry in India. The allocation of funds to the IT ministry will stimulate growth and development in the sector.
