The term brand is interchangeably used with marketing and comprises an array of definitions. It’s difficult to gauge the impact of branding but at the same time, there are anecdotal and empirical pieces of evidence signifying its contribution to business growth. Branding helps in a better understanding of your target audience and seeks a very different purpose from marketing.
With the penetration of technology and accessibility to better tools, many SMEs are revamping their brand image to bridge the gap between their offerings and the audience. However, these same tools are available to their competitors which undermine their leverage of setting a unique place in the market, I have tried to enumerate few pointers which can help SMEs to mitigate this challenge:
The customer should feel like a part of the brand. It should give them a sense of pride and affiliation, both of which are important in the process of customer retention. If we dig a little deeper, we will find the source of these virtues stems from trust. Trust ensures that the customer sticks to you even in the time of adversaries like price wars, new competition, or any other crisis.
For a business to run sustainably it must provide value to its customers. The showrunners should understand that it’s not a zero-sum game and their profits cannot come at the expense of their customer’s loss. The market provides an umpteen example of companies that follow the above principle at the time of initiation and growth but reverses their strategy once they reach a stable phase. This cycle seals their fate to the inevitable doom. Such follies can be avoided by constantly knowing your audience’s mindset which can be equated to reading the pulse of the market. Enabling customers with easy feedback tools is one way to ensure this which in turn helps the companies to further refine their offerings and gain an edge over their competitors.
In poetic terms, brands are a persona of their products and should connect more intimately with their audience. Rather than using popular figures companies should put their employee videos, customer testimonial videos over their social media handles. Reflecting on the reality of your business enables the brands to develop true values.

Brand aesthetics should be communicated in the terms of the target audience. As the companies grow in terms of the number of customers it becomes difficult to understand their tone due to an increase in diversity. Company communications assimilating the diversity of their audience brings required customization at the larger level.
The companies should not shy away from rebranding as continuous modifications bring them closer to their customer. The major objective is to be more relevant and sound more familiar to the audience. In tough times companies that have worked on their rebranding have stood high and paved their way to the top
Overall Branding is tricky where it can both make or break the company. With increased awareness and technical accessibility among customers, it becomes crucial to distinguish yourself by communicating the values of both company and the product and the above steps can help one achieve that!
