India Aims to Increase Domestic Coking Coal Production to 140 Million Tonnes by 2030

It’s clear that the Indian government is taking a number of steps to increase domestic production of coking coal, including identifying and developing new mines, expanding existing mines, and inviting private sector participation through auctions and revenue sharing agreements. These efforts are aimed at meeting the government’s target of increasing domestic coking coal production to 140 million tonnes by 2030, and at reducing the country’s reliance on imports. It’s also worth noting that the government is looking to improve the environmental performance of the coal industry through the use of clean coal technologies and research and development.

Outlook

It seems that Coal India Limited (CIL), a state-owned coal mining company, is playing a major role in the Indian government’s efforts to increase domestic production of coking coal. CIL has plans to increase production from existing mines by up to 26 million tonnes, and has identified nine new mines with a Peak Rate Capacity (PRC) of approximately 22 million tonnes by 2024-25. In addition, CIL is offering eight of the 30 discontinued coking coal mines to the private sector on a revenue sharing model, with a PRC of 2 million tonnes. These measures are part of CIL’s efforts to contribute to the government’s target of increasing domestic coking coal production to 140 million tonnes by 2030.
