Monsoon’s Impact On Indian Chilli Market: Unpredictable Rainfall And Quality Issues Lead To Price Fall

The chilli market in India witnessed a roller coaster ride this year. While the farmers saw a glimmer of hope with the high prices in February 2023, the sudden downpour in March 2023 led to a price drop. Has this season proven to be beneficial for farmers and traders? Let’s delve deeper and find out.

Brief Overview

  • Highs & Lows- During February 2023, the prices of various types of chillies reached as high as ₹280/kg, which proved to be profitable for farmers. However, as the season was coming to an end, prices dropped to ₹200/kg due to sudden rainfall. While this could have been advantageous for traders, quality issues led to increased processing costs for them, and the high moisture content resulted in a 15%-20% loss. Rainfall’s side-effect was felt across almost all varieties, with chilli being affected by fungus and white spots during the drying process. Consequently, the quality suffered, and it had a significant impact on the prices in April 2023.
  • Competition & Record Bids- In January 2023 and February 2023, major FMCG companies engaged in fierce competition for their chilli stocks. There was a significant arrival of deluxe quality chilli as well. This competition drove the market price up to ₹280/kg in the midseason. Most companies procured their stocks from all major markets in India, setting a record in bidding. This news brought joy to the farmers.
  • Monsoon Twist– The monsoon suddenly changed the course of the market. Prices dropped, and bidding fell to ₹230/kg. Due to the decline in quality, there were fewer bids for good-quality chillies, and the moisture damage in the drying yards led to a shortage of 10%-20%. These conditions persisted throughout April 2023, prices fell as low as ₹200/kg. The rain hindered activities such as drying, heaping, grading, and purchasing, leading to a significant decline in sales and bidding.
  • Festive Season & Export Orders- Amidst these challenging circumstances, the festive season arrived, including Ramadan, which brought substantial export orders. This helped the teja chilli variety maintain stability in the market at ₹220-230/kg.

Market Outlook

Now that the market has entered a hiatus, sales will only resume in cold storage facilities, and even then, they are expected to be sluggish. As the break concludes, it is estimated that prices in cold storage will rise by ₹15-25/kg, and there is hope for an upward trend in prices starting next week.

OFB’s Insight

The chilli market witnessed a turbulent season due to unexpected rainfall, resulting in quality issues and price fluctuations. While farmers faced challenges in maintaining quality, traders had to bear additional costs. The festive season and export orders provided some respite, but the market is expected to remain subdued until it picks up momentum after the break. Farmers and traders will closely monitor the price movements, hoping for a favourable market ahead.
