Indonesia Thermal Coal Prices and Analysis

Summary

Indonesian thermal coal prices rise amid supply disruptions and increased Chinese demand post-Lunar New Year. Persistent rains impact production and congestion at ports, leading to limited spot cargoes. Traders face challenges navigating this evolving market.

The Indonesian thermal coal market has witnessed positive changes in the past week(18th-23rd February 2024), impacting both prices and supply dynamics. Let’s take a closer look at the key factors influencing these developments in thermal coal prices.

Price Trends in Thermal Coal

Indonesian thermal coal prices have experienced an upward trend recently. Specifically, low-CV (3400 GAR) coal prices rose by $0.33/t to $36.92/t, while high-CV (5800 GAR) coal prices increased by $0.89/t to $94.26/t. This shift in coal prices can be attributed to various factors affecting the market.

Supply Challenges in Thermal Coal

On the thermal coal supply side, Indonesia faced disruptions due to persistent rains in regions like Sumatra and Kalimantan. Rain-induced delays in coal production and congestion at the ports have limited the availability of spot cargo. Many coal miners have already sold out for the current month, contributing to supply constraints.

Chinese Demand Post-Lunar New Year

A noteworthy boost in Indonesian thermal coal demand has come from China, as buyers returned after the Lunar New Year holidays. The surge in Chinese domestic coal prices has led to increased inquiries for Indonesian thermal coal. However, preferences are for prompt-loading cargoes, with weaker demand for end-March and virtually no demand for April-loading cargoes. Some Indonesian miners are looking to liquidate cargoes ahead of Ramadan.

Coal Market Outlook for Indonesia

Looking ahead, Indonesian coal prices may continue to rise due to increased demand from China and anticipated growth in Indian demand as summer progresses. However, potential coal thermal supply constraints from ongoing rains in Indonesia could pose challenges.

The Indonesian thermal coal market is navigating a complex landscape influenced by weather-related disruptions, increased Chinese demand, and sustained Indian consumption. Traders and stakeholders should closely monitor these factors for informed decision-making in the growing thermal coal market.
