Summary
Often referred to as the lifeline of the nation, Indian Railways faces a pressing challenge- the need to nearly double its coal transportation capacity. Indian Railways has emphasized that the current capacity of 660 million tons (MT) per annum needs to be increased to a staggering 1,200 MTs by 2030. Energy Demand Conundrum
India’s energy requirements are poised for exponential growth, projected to reach approximately 3,000 billion units (BU) by 2030. Failing to meet this escalating demand could have catastrophic consequences, leading to severe shortages or outages across various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation. In 2022, the power sector’s coal demand was noted at 306.70 million tons (April 2022-August 2022) but in 2023 there is a growth of 5.80% 324.5 million tons (April 23-August 2023).
While the National Rail Plan had initially projected a coal requirement of 1,547 MTs by 2030 now the latest revised estimate of 1,853 MTs. This upward revision accounts for the country’s high economic growth rate and per capita energy consumption.
Thermal Energy’s Crucial Role
Currently, thermal sources contribute to nearly 75% of India’s energy production. The railways play a pivotal role in transporting approximately 65% of the coal required for power generation. However, this scenario is expected to witness a transformation by 2030, with a projected shift towards a balance of 65% thermal and 35% non-thermal sources. The transition is attributed to the low plant load factor of renewable energy sources compared to thermal sources.
Prioritizing Infrastructure Development
To facilitate the smooth flow of coal to thermal power plants, there is a need to prioritize the construction of two proposed dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) – the East-West and East Coast DFCs. These corridors are crucial to enhancing the efficiency and capacity of coal transportation.
This recommendation aligns with the government’s efforts to bolster infrastructure, especially after nearing completion of the Eastern and Western DFCs.
Vision For 2030
Indian Railways aims to position India with a GDP size of $7.2 trillion by 2030, comparing growth trends with other nations. Expanding Indian Railways coal transportation capacity is not merely an infrastructural challenge but an imperative step to ensure an uninterrupted energy supply for the nation’s burgeoning needs. As India continues its journey towards becoming a global economic powerhouse, addressing this challenge becomes paramount.
