Dealing with “big”
Over time, my fascination with how we deal with being “big” has grown. In my mind, I see a clear funnel.
- The vast majority of us “dream” big, it’s almost taught at schools, it’s a commodity.
- Many of them, but still a majority, “plan” big. They, in their mind, take their dreams and put them into a well-oiled plan.
- Few of them “act” big. They put their energy and focus behind the plan above.
- Even fewer can “manage” big. Having got to scale, the pressures and complexities of scale take over; it’s tough managing people, capital, time, personal goals, etc.
- Rarest are the ones that can “grow” bigger after being big. Even while they’d have got big in one, they’d keep looking for adjacencies: opportunities that look big and they fit into. And then, they’d quickly make do with some resources and go after it, all in. So, as the time comes to “manage” the 1st, the 2nd would be delivering scale. And the cycle is never-ending. Jeff Bezos, Jack Ma, the Tatas, and Ambanis typify this ability in having built their empires.
One of the key things that we preach (and practice) at OfBusiness, is that you have a chance of reaching the end of the funnel only if you go through it fast. Dash ahead from dream to plan to act to manage so that you have a chance to build an empire.
