Petroleum Products Market

India is the third-largest consumer of petroleum products globally with demand exceeding 220 million tonnes annually. The country has a refining capacity of over 250 million tonnes through PSU and private refineries.

Key petroleum products include fuels (petrol, diesel, ATF), feedstocks (naphtha, LPG), and industrial products (bitumen, lubricants, fuel oil). Pricing follows international crude oil movements with varying degrees of government control across products.

Industrial Petroleum Products

Major industrial petroleum products include:

  • Bitumen: Used in road construction and waterproofing. Available in VG 10, VG 30, VG 40 grades and modified variants.
  • Fuel Oil: Industrial heating fuel for boilers and furnaces. Available as FO, LSHS, LDO.
  • Lubricants: Industrial oils for machinery including hydraulic, gear, compressor, and specialty oils.
  • Petroleum Coke: Solid fuel and anode material for aluminum smelting.

Energy & Petroleum FAQs

What's bitumen costing per kg?
Bitumen prices: VG 10 goes for ₹44-48/kg VG 30 runs ₹46-52/kg VG 40 costs ₹48-54/kg or ₹44000-54000 per MT. Modified bitumen (PMB CRMB) adds 20-30% on top. IOC BPCL and HPCL revise prices fortnightly based on crude oil.
Which bitumen grade for road construction?
VG 30 handles most Indian roads - works well in tropical climates with moderate traffic. VG 40 for highways airports and heavy traffic areas. VG 10 for cold regions and spraying. PMB/CRMB for expressways and bridges with heavy axle loads. IRC specifications guide the choice.
What exactly is VG 30 bitumen?
VG 30 (Viscosity Grade 30) is paving-grade bitumen with viscosity 2400-3600 poise at 60°C. Most common grade for road construction in India. Softening point minimum 47°C. Replaced the old 60/70 penetration grade. Costs ₹46-52/kg.
How does bitumen get transported?
Bitumen travels in: heated tankers keeping 150-170°C for bulk carriers on large projects drums (200kg) for smaller quantities. Requires heated storage at the site. Bulk tanker delivery is most economical when you need over 50 MT for road projects.
What's modified bitumen?
Modified bitumen has polymers added for better performance. PMB (Polymer Modified) uses SBS rubber for flexibility. CRMB uses crumb rubber from waste tires. Costs 20-30% more than VG grades. Used on heavy traffic roads bridges and airport runways.
What paperwork do I need for bitumen?
Bitumen purchase needs: GST registration valid delivery address and a purchase order for credit. Quality certificates showing VG grade penetration and softening point come with each lot. Weighbridge slips verify quantity.
