Crude oil global demand is rapidly growing, especially in developing nations, as governments focus on energy transition policies. This demand is driven by the world’s second and third-largest economies, China and India. India has become a major buyer of Russian crude, but this may change as Russia announces a 5% cut in its crude oil output.
OPEC+ Production In 2023
Amrita Sen, the co-founder of Energy Aspects, said that OPEC+ will keep its production flat in 2023. This is supported by strong demand and price projections for crude oil this year, providing little reason for the cartel to implement changes. Russia’s cut in production only reinforces this notion, and OPEC+ has no plans to respond to this move.
Strong Demand And Price Predictions
Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan have set their average crude price forecasts for 2023 at $92 and $90/ barrel, respectively. Three of the five OPEC+ member nations predicted that crude prices will rise above $100/ barrel for at least part of the year. The US Energy Information Administration predicts that domestic crude production will average 12.4 million barrels/ day, an increase of 500,000 from 2022.
U.S. Shale Drillers In A Sweet Spot
Despite strong prices, US shale drillers are choosing to hold their drilling activities in check. The discipline imposed by investors has led to strong cash flows, high profitability, and predictability in business plans, making the lives of management teams much easier. This dynamic is unlikely to change in 2023, absent major global events that upset the status quo.
Insight
Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on oil markets, the global industry finds itself in a stable state with little reason to implement major strategic shifts. 2023 comes across up as a year where the industry will strive to maintain a comfortable status quo.
