Ministry of Coal In India Plans 19 New First Mile Connectivity Projects To Improve Coal Transportation

The Ministry of Coal in India is planning to take up 19 additional First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects for Coal India Limited (CIL) and the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) with a capacity of 330 million tons.

These projects, which are aimed at improving the efficiency and environmental friendliness of coal evacuation, will b e implemented by the financial year 2026-2027. The ministry has already undertaken 55 FMC projects with a capacity of 526 million tons per annum, and has set a target to produce 1.31 billion tons of coal by the financial year 2025 and 1.5 billion tons by the financial year 2030.

To achieve these goals, the ministry is working on the development of a National Coal Logistic Plan that includes the development of railway sidings near coal mines and the strengthening of rail networks in coalfields. The ministry has also formulated a strategy to eliminate road transportation of coal in mines and has taken steps to upgrade mechanized coal transportation and loading systems under the FMC projects.

A study conducted by the National Environmental Research Institute (NEERI) in 2020-2021 found that the FMC projects would result in yearly carbon emissions savings, a reduction in truck movement density, and diesel savings of $293 million per year.
