Steel prices in India reached a new high and recorded over three months high. As a result, buyers and sellers were concerned by the huge price increase. Price increases were mostly due to increased domestic demand, resumed exports, and positive tendencies.
On November 19, 2022, six months after the levy’s implementation on May 21, 2022, the government decided to abolish the export levies on iron and steel products. No wonder the price of steel in India increased by around Rs 7,000–8,000 ($85–100) per tonnes during November 20, 2022 to January 2, 2023.
The large steel mills increased the prices of finished steel products by Rs 3,000–4,000 per tonne up until December. As per the sources, the plants floated offers higher by about Rs 2,000 per tonne for January 2023. The overall increase by the major mills is about Rs 5,000–6,000 per tonne in long steel products after the Indian government announced removing the export duties.
Effects On The Short-Term Future Trends
Industry insiders believe that prices would either stabilise or might face minor adjustments because the mid-sized steel mills’ desire for revised (higher) offers is a little slow.
On the other hand, despite a reduced demand in the current offers, healthy prior orders with suppliers, and rising raw material prices suggest that offers should stabilise.
Recent bulk export orders of raw materials, and metallics have somehow relieved selling pressure among domestic pellet and pig iron manufacturers. However, if the activities go back up in full force, new export orders will determine the trends in the Indian steel market.
In the meantime, the large mills are currently running short on inventory; particularly in a few finished long steel products, so they continue to be bullish on the movement of the steel prices.
