In 2023, Indonesia’s coal production is estimated to reach new heights, as per the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, (ESDM) Indonesia official. The country’s coal output for 2022 has already exceeded the target set by the Ministry. In 2023, record-breaking production is estimated as well.
The official states that it is expected that in 2023, 694.5 million tons of coal will be produced in Indonesia. The forecast exceeds the 663 million tons of production in 2022, which already exceeded the ESDM’s goal. Increased coal prices, domestic market obligations, and nearby fertilizer and cement industries’ supply are a few reasons behind the increase in production.
Domestic And International Supply
Lana Saria, the Minister of Coal Business Development of the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Indonesia, stated that of the 694.5 million tons of coal production target for 2023, 517.7 million tons will be planned for the export market and 176.8 million tons for domestic supply. The official also stated that weather conditions, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and global demand, will play a crucial role in Indonesia’s coal production.
Work Plans And Budgets
749 Indonesian miners submitted work plans and budgets to the ESDM for 2023, with 263 firms proposing to reduce production and 486 companies proposing to expand production. For instance, Bumi Resources intends to raise production this year to 81.35 million tons, while coal company GEMS anticipates a 5% growth in production in 2023 to roughly 39 million tons, which is less than its target of 40 million tons.
Director of GEMS, Bonifasius stated that the industrial upswing would stimulate energy consumption and help Indonesia’s coal exports as China’s epidemic control measures were relaxed. He assured that the firm would increase coal production this year.
