India’s total coal production saw a significant increase of 10.81% in December 2022, reaching 82.87 million tons (MT) as compared to 74.79 MT of coal produced in December 2021. This growth can be attributed to a combination of factors, including the growing demand for energy in the country and advances in mining technology. The state-owned company Coal India Limited (CIL) was the major contributor to this increase, with production growth of 10.30%. The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and captive mines/others also saw production increases of 19.12% and 9.01%, respectively.
In addition to the increase in coal production, there was also a rise in coal dispatch or the process of sending coal to customers. Dispatch increased by 5.28% to 78.91 MT in December 2022 as compared to the previous year. This was due to growth in the despatch of CIL, SCCL, and captive mines/others, which saw increases of 3.57%, 17.89%, and 8.85%, respectively. Power utilities, which rely on coal as a source of energy, also saw a dispatch increase of 4.26% to 65.65 MT in December 2022.
It is worth noting that 28 coal mines in India achieved production levels of over 100% in December 2022, while four mines had production levels between 80% and 100%. This demonstrates the significant increase in coal production in the country, which has likely been driven by the growing demand for energy. However, it is important to consider the environmental and health impacts of coal mining and use, as the extraction and burning of coal releases large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. There is a growing movement to reduce our reliance on coal and shift to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
