Primary TMT bars are produced directly from virgin iron ore in large integrated steel plants, ensuring consistent quality, strength, and chemical composition. These are the highest-grade reinforcement bars used in major infrastructure and high-rise projects.
How is Primary TMT manufactured
The process begins in a blast furnace, where pure iron ore, coke, and limestone are heated to produce molten iron. This iron is refined in Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOF) to remove carbon and other impurities. The refined steel is then cast into billets, which serve as the raw material for rolling TMT bars.
The billets are passed through automated rolling mills to achieve the desired diameter. As the red-hot bars emerge, they undergo a specialized quenching process , a rapid cooling treatment using high-pressure water jets. This step hardens the outer surface while keeping the core hot and malleable. As the core cools naturally, it self-tempers, forming a tough outer shell with a ductile inner core , a combination that gives TMT bars their signature strength and flexibility.
Post-cooling, the bars are air-cooled on cooling beds to achieve a uniform microstructure. The surface is then given ribs through precision rolling, which ensures superior bonding with concrete. The final product exhibits a clean metallic finish, uniform rib pattern, and accurate dimensions ,signs of a high-quality primary TMT bar.
Because they are made from fresh billets, primary TMT bars have minimal levels of sulfur and phosphorus, elements that cause brittleness. They undergo stringent bend, tensile, and elongation tests to meet BIS standards (IS 1786). The chemical composition and microstructure of each batch are lab-tested to maintain uniformity across production.
